Critical Edition

Below you will find guidance and examples of how to reference a Critical Edition in the body of your work and in the reference list at the end.

In text citation

A Critical edition has a double dating system where you use the date of the original text and the date of the edition, separated by a slash.

Example:
Shelley (1818/2012) states that...

OR
... (Shelley, 1818/2012).

Reference list

Print

Last name, Initial(s). (Year). Book title (Editor, Ed.; edition).  Publisher. (Date original work published).

Example:

Shelley, M. (2012). Frankenstein (J. P. Hunter, Ed.; 2nd Norton critical ed.). W. W. Norton. (Original work published in 1818).

 

Online

Last name, Initial(s). (Year). Book title (Editor, Ed.; edition).   Publisher. DOI (Date original work published).

Example

Shelley, M. (2012). Frankenstein (J. P. Hunter, Ed.; 2nd Norton critical ed.). W. W. Norton. https://doi.org/10.1037/10319-010 (Original work published in 1818).
