Guide to grey literature

Grey literature refers to any research material that is produced outside of the traditional publishing models which produce academic books and journal articles. Grey literature can be the best source of up-to-date research on some topics; note, however, that grey literature is not usually subject to peer review and must be evaluated accordingly.

Some examples of grey literature are:

  • conference papers / conference proceedings
  • theses
  • clinical trials
  • newsletters
  • pamphlets
  • reports
  • fact sheets
  • bulletins
  • government documents
  • surveys
  • interviews
  • informal communication (e.g. blogs, podcasts, email)

This guide provides some high quality grey literature sources, but it isn't exhaustive. Please do let us know if you discover a source you feel would be a good addition to the guide.
