Importing references into EndNote

You can import records directly to EndNote from most structured bibliographic databases. Details of how to import from some of the most commonly used databases are below and the technique can be seen on the Importing to Endnote video below.

It is always best to check your imported records to make sure EndNote has captured everything correctly.

iFind, the Library Catalogue

Google Scholar

You need to change Scholar preferences to see the EndNote option. Click the icon with three bars at the top left of the screen then choose settings. Under Bibliography Manager choose the option Show links to import citations into EndNote. Click Save.

To export a reference

  • Carry out your search and click the Import into EndNote link for the reference you want to import.
  • Open the downloaded file and details should load into EndNote.

To export multiple references click the star by each record you want to save then click My library at the top of the screen. Select the references from My library then click on the download button. Choose the EndNote option and your references will import into EndNote.

Note that the import will miss some fields, for example, doi and abstract as Google Scholar is not formatted like commercial databases.

EBSCO databases (CINAHL, PsycINFO, Medline, Business Source Complete)

To export a reference

  • Select some records by clicking the folder symbol at the right of each record.
  • Click on the folder symbol (in the blue line at the top of the screen)
  • Click Export
  • Choose Direct export in RIS format. Click the Save button and open the downloaded file. You may be asked to choose EndNote or EndNote Online. Choose EndNote and the references should import into your EndNote library.

To export a large number of references choose the email file option.

Proquest databases (ASSIA, Inspec, IBSS)

To export a reference

  • Carry out your search and mark some records. Click on three dots at the top of the results list. Choose RIS.
  • Click Continue then open the file. You may then need to choose between EndNote and EndNote online. Your references should load into EndNote.
  • Proquest makes use of popup windows so you may need to disable popup blockers for export to work.
