Exploring Our Libraries

Swansea University is home to five libraries. The two main libraries are the Bay Library and the Singleton Park Library. Each offers a welcoming space tailored to support your academic success.

Entrance to the Bay Library Entrace to Singleton Park Library

Bay Library – Situated on the Bay Campus, this modern facility supports students in Engineering, Management, and Computer Science.

Singleton Park Library – Located at the heart of the Singleton Campus, this is the largest library and offers a wide range of resources across all subject areas.

Students can also use St David's Park Library, South Wales Miners Library and Banwen Library. You can find information about our library sites and when they’re open by visiting the Library Opening Hours and Locations page. You can also find out more by accessing our Library Essentials course: Exploring the Library Sites. Once you enrol the link will take you directly to this course.

Accessibility guides are available for the Bay Library and the Singleton Park Library.

Our Digital Provision

We support teaching and learning primarily through digital provision including eBooks, journals, and databases. This ensures flexible and remote access to key resources.

If digital versions are not available, we also provide print items. See the box below for details on how to access these.

You can search for content using the iFind link below.

Finding, Borrowing and Renewing Books

Search iFind

Start by searching for the book using iFind, the library’s main search tool. You can search by title, author, subject, or keyword. You can find out more about using iFind by clicking on the Searching our resources tab.

Check the Book’s Location and Availability

Once you find the book in iFind, make a note of:

  • Which library it’s in (e.g. Bay Library, Singleton Park Library)
  • Its availability (whether it’s on the shelf or on loan)
  • The shelfmark (also known as the call number) – this is a combination of numbers and letters that tells you where the book is located on the shelves.

Use the Shelfmark to Find the Book

Go to the correct library and look for signs that guide you to the right section. Books are arranged in numerical order by shelfmark, so follow the numbers until you reach the right one. The letters help you find the exact book within that number range.

Need Help? Just Ask!

If you're having trouble finding a book, library staff are always happy to help.

You can find out more about finding a book on the shelves in the Library Essentials Borrowing Items tutorial.

You can borrow most library items quickly and easily using our self-service kiosks. Just tap your University ID card (or your home library or institutional ID card if you're an external borrower) on the kiosk, then follow the on-screen instructions to check out your items. If you prefer, you can also borrow items directly from the library desk.

Some items need to be borrowed directly from the library desk. These include inter-library loans, theses, materials stored in our library stores, and specialist equipment designed to support accessibility needs. Swansea University students and staff can borrow from any of our five library locations: Singleton Park Library, Bay Library, South Wales Miners’ Library, Banwen Library, and St David’s Park Library.

You can find further information on borrowing a book in the Library Essentials Borrowing Items tutorial. You can also find guidance on the library webpages.

Most of the time, your library loans will renew automatically, so you don’t need to worry about doing it yourself. As long as no one else has requested the item and it’s eligible for renewal, the system will take care of it for you.

If for any reason your loan can’t be renewed - for example, if someone else has requested it - you’ll get an email notification letting you know when it’s due back.

You can always keep track of your loans by logging into your iFind account. There, you’ll see:

  • What you’ve borrowed
  • When each item is due
  • Whether an item can be renewed or not

Just a heads-up: due dates can change if an item is recalled, but don’t worry—we’ll email you if that happens so you’re always in the loop.

You find more information on renewing library items on the library webpages.

Booking a Library Study or PC Space

Most areas within the library are available to use without booking in advance. You’re welcome to drop in and find a quiet spot, a group table, or a comfy seat to study whenever you like.

Examples of these spaces include group study spaces and PC spaces. You can find full details of bookable spaces here: Bookable Library Spaces.

Bookable spaces can be reserved using our online booking system.

You can find out more about booking spaces in the Library Essentials Booking Spaces tutorial.

Printing, photocopying and scanning

All multifunction printers (MFPs) in the library allow you to print, copy, and scan. To use them:

  • Tap your student ID card on the card reader attached to the printer.
  • The first time, you’ll be prompted to enter your Swansea University username and password.
  • Once linked, you can simply tap your card to log in in the future.

Tip: If you forget your card, you can log in manually using your university credentials.

Further guidance is available on the print, copy, scan webpage.
