Embedded Library and Information Literacy Skills Sessions

A crucial role of Subject Librarian Teams is to help develop our students' academic and life-long skills, including their information literacy skills set.  Information literacy is knowing when and why you need information, where to find it and how to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner. The more information skills teaching can be progressively embedded into a programme and integrated with their coursework, the more students are likely to see it as relevant to their needs.

Making the first step

Please contact your Librarians to discuss a Library Induction as a starting point for your students' engagement with the Library and its resources, as well as being introduced to the support that the subject librarians can provide.  This is the first step of embedding sessions throughout a programme. We can further help students build the information skills they need to succeed throughout their degree and into employment.

Embedding in-person, remotely, or through pre-recorded classes

Your Librarians are able to support embedded skills through an in-person class, through Zoom or MS Teams, or through providing a pre-recorded session.  Please do speak to your Academic Liaison or Subject librarians on how you can ensure students are receiving valuable support in their academic information skills.

You can find our information and digital literacy teaching offer at our Embedding Academic Skills Portfolio intranet site.  In addition to the presented portfolio, we can offer bespoke induction and classes to suit your programme's needs, at both pre-sessional, undergraduate, or post-graduate levels.

Our portfolio of teaching and instruction sessions include, but are not exclusive to:

  • Literature searching, including using AI
  • Referencing in university approved styles (APA, MHRA, OSCOLA, Vancouver)
  • Evaluating resources
  • EndNote
  • Effective use of specific databases
  • Searching for newspapers, and historical or cultural items

Student self-directed learning

MyUni Library Essentials and MyUni Library Postgraduate

This course is made up of tutorials and videos designed by your Librarians, and will help students get the most out of your Library both online and on campus. Students can work your way through the complete course, giving them a good working knowledge of how to use the Library and furthering their academic information skills needed for their course. Alternatively, they can pick and choose topics for expanding or refreshing their knowledge they may have covered in a library class.

Students can enrol in this course in Canvas by searching for MyUni Library Essentials and self-enrol. There is also a MyUni Library Postgraduate course which gives additional research skills content.

Library Skills Programme

The Library has a rolling programme of library skills throughout the year which students can register to drop-in to.  A full list can be found at the link below.  Academics are encouraged to promote these courses to students during the appropriate time in a programme.

Support for individual students

Individual appointments can also be booked with a librarian if a student is struggling with finding, accessing, or using information for academic work. We do suggest they consult their subject Library Guides first, or MyUni Library Essentials course in Canvas.

Ask a Librarian (live chat) is available between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday for quick questions. Students find this way of engagement and communication very useful, and we have high satisfaction ratings for our responses.
