Simple checklist for Green Open Access publishing

What is green open access?

Green Open Access means depositing a version of your article (usually the AAM) in a repository, making it freely accessible.

  • AAM: The version after peer review but before publisher formatting.

  • Repositories: Can be institutional (e.g. university repository such as RIS) or subject-based (e.g. arXiv, Europe PMC)

1. Check funder requirements if you have one

Eg: UKRI

  • Must deposit AAM immediately upon publication.

  • Must apply a CC BY licence. Check if publisher offers UKRI compliant licence before submission.

  • No embargo allowed.

  • Include a Rights Retention Statement (RRS) in your manuscript:

“For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising.”

UKRI Policy:

2. Check publisher’s self archiving policies

  • The JISC Open  Policy Finder (see link below) provides summaries of publisher policies on:

  • Which version you can deposit ( AAM, published)

  • Embargo periods

  • Licensing requirements

  • Confirm which version you’re allowed to deposit:

  • Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM)

  • Published Version (PDF) – usually not allowed unless Gold OA

3. Obtain your AAM (Author Accepted Manuscript)

  • Retain your AAM from your publisher after acceptance.

  • Make sure you apply a CC-BY license  – there is a link to as hort video [5m] on what the different license are and what they below.

4. Include a Rights Retention Statement (RRS) in your manuscript:

If you aren’t sure what wording to use for this, or the benefits of using a RRS, there are two very short videos below.

There is also list of publishers who have been notified of Swansea University’s Rights Retention Policy.

5. Deposit in RIS

There is guidance on how to log in to RIS and deposit your manuscript in the link below.
