Below you will find guidance and examples of how to set out a reference to Twitter in the body of your work and in the reference list at the end.

In text citations

Example:

APA Databases (2019) states that...
OR
...(APA Databases, 2019).

Reference list

Author [@username]. (Year, Month Day). First twenty words of the title [Description of audio-visuals]. Twitter. URL 

Example:

APA Databases [@APA_Databases]. (2019, September 5). Help students avoid plagiarism and researchers navigate the publication process. More details available in the 7th edition @APA_Style table [Image attached] [Tweet]. Twitter. https://twitter.com/APA_Databases/status/1169644365452578823 

Note:

Provide the Twitter handle (beginning with the @ sign) in square brackets.

If the tweet includes an image, a video, a poll, or a thumbnail image with a link, indicate that in brackets after the title: [Image attached], [Video attached], [Thumbnail with link attached]. Include the description “[Tweet]” in square brackets after the title. 

The format used for Twitter is also used for Instagram and TikTok.
